Platinum Jewelry Demand to Rise in Asia, Johnson Matthey Says

Nov. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Platinum demand for jewelry in China and Japan, the two largest consumers, will probably rise next year regardless of a global recession after prices fell from a record and as metal recycling declines, Johnson Matthey Plc said.

``We are beginning to see people come back to the market because of a lower price,'' Rainaldo O'Meara, market research manager at the London-based company, said today in an interview in Tokyo. ``This may well continue into next year.''

Platinum jewelry demand in China will drop 22 percent to 610,000 ounces this year, the lowest in a decade, Johnson Matthey said in a report. Demand in Japan will shrink 78 percent to 40,000 ounces this year, the lowest in at least 10 years, after soaring prices discouraged buying from consumers and spurred them to sell the metal, Johnson Matthey said.

Bangkok, Thailand--The 42nd edition of the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair will run from Sept. 11-15, despite safety concerns over the reported political unrest in the Thai capital.

"The show venue is far away from any of the locations where civil protests were held earlier [last] week," Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair Chief Executive Officer Somchai Phornchindarak said in a media release issued on Friday. "All popular tourist locations, hotels throughout the city as well as the gem and jewelry district itself are unaffected."

Phornchindarak added that as in previous years, show visitors can use shuttle bus services to and from the Impact Challenger exhibition center in the Thai capital all day.

Mary Glantz is not a pedestrian collector of jewelry. She's, quite simply, a fanatic. "I really love jewelry and I have a passion for it," she said. "I decided to create an opportunity to share the sparkle and elegance of jewelry with people." In December of 2007, Glantz opened the doors on her online business.

"I'm really excited about being a part of the jewelry trade; excited about having the opportunity to get to know more about jewelry and what makes that piece a quality one," explained Glantz. "Jewelry is such a unique way to express your individual style and taste."

Though it's still in its infancy, there are already talks on furthering the webstore's selection: "My future plans are to find the latest fashions in jewelry, the newest trends, and offer a wider selection of types of gemstones and fashions."
