Surat diamond industry is shining back
By Rajesh Kumar, Section India Jewelry News Posted on Sun Oct 11, 2009 at 09:02:04 AM EST
The Surat diamond industry is going to have a smaller Diwali break of only a week, which otherwise would run into 20 days. Yet it is good news for the factories, which have been hard hit by the economic downturn in the past year. Most of the factories had closed and workers were thrown off jobs due to the slack markets. Surat is the backbone of diamond cutting and polishing in India. And now with the upswing in the economy, the city is beaming again with business.
Workers are being re-hired with higher salaries than before, to keep the output running. Demand is in high peak and as per feedback, diamond manufacturers of diamonds between 0.30 pointers to 3carats are having their factories operate overtime. Demand has been on the rise for loose diamonds from India, China, and the middle-east. The Indian hub for diamond cutting and polishing is regaining its spotlight again.
