Bangkok, Thailand--The 42nd edition of the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair will run from Sept. 11-15, despite safety concerns over the reported political unrest in the Thai capital.
"The show venue is far away from any of the locations where civil protests were held earlier [last] week," Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair Chief Executive Officer Somchai Phornchindarak said in a media release issued on Friday. "All popular tourist locations, hotels throughout the city as well as the gem and jewelry district itself are unaffected." Phornchindarak added that as in previous years, show visitors can use shuttle bus services to and from the Impact Challenger exhibition center in the Thai capital all day.
This year, a new service called "business matching," which is being organized by the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA), will be introduced at the show.
"Business matching is a joint initiative of the Department of Export Promotion of the Thai Ministry of Commerce and the TGJTA to help prospective gems and jewelry buyers find the products they are looking for," TGJTA President Vichai Assarasakorn said in the release. "Last month, for example, we had a successful session with a Swiss buying agency that operates offices not only in Thailand, but also in Hong Kong, greater China and many other Asian countries." In this case, the Swiss company acted as the direct buying agent of four major European retailers who import products from Asia to their markets in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, purchasing 18-karat yellow and white gold jewelry set with colored gemstones and diamonds, as well as a wide range of sterling silver jewelry from more than 30 different Thai companies.
